System of representing numbers by a single
set of digits with the decimal point in its
correct position (for example, 97.8, 0.978).
For very large and very small numbers this
requires a lot of digits, and so in computing
the numbers that can be handled in this form
will be limited by the capacity of a
computer; this means that floating-point
notation is often preferred.
